One thing I might add, that was stressed multiple times when we were playing "Army 101" at Ft. Bliss in New Mexico, hottest part of the summer, etc., was NOT to drink energy drinks. (Monster, Red Bull, Rockstar, Etc.) I can count a couple of stupid Navy Reserve guys who thought it was silly for the Army guy to tell them this, and after a hot day in the sun, they were falling out, and were getting stuck with IV's in their feet to rapidly hydrate them.

Of course, sometimes you can't tell people anything. But if the guy says, "drink one liter of water before we leave," I will certainly do so. (Check the second to last sentence)

We were also told by a wise Navy Warrant to drink a ratio of three to one, one gatorade to three bottles of water. Keep that going the whole day.

Another tidbit I would also add, as far as the medical situation goes, if you have ever had any sort of heat related condition in the past, you are more susceptible to having a repeat...

Anyway, an ounce of preparedness is worth a pound of cure.

Take it easy, and I am looking forward to this hike/camp/butt bake! After losing a beloved family member/pet in 2010, for the 1st time I thought about what becomes of these animals who suffer from the fall just as we humans do. Like you, I know of no scripture that speaks specifically to this. But there are some scriptures that give me hope that we might see them again:
Matthew 19:28Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Acts 3;"19 Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, 21 whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time."

At the renewal/restoration of all things? I can only dream of what all that might include. And speaking of not just humans, but animals and all of the creation suffering after the fall, and speaking of restoration:
Romans 8:"18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. 24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it."

Does not this whole creation which is suffering in bondage aka "slavery to corruption" include His animals? I pray that it is so!
Bill
BillyBob58
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14796972789349773489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147944621013401905.post-16952444411600790352014-10-06T21:49:06.322-05:002014-10-06T21:49:06.322-05:00It's sad to say good bye even for those of fai...It's sad to say good bye even for those of faith and hope who recognize they are bathed in grace. As a result of this promise and others, he was elected by an overwhelming majority of Texans, defeating a Moderate Republican who has been in Texas politics most of his adult life, who holds the most politically powerful office in the State, and who spent three times more money than Cruz did in the effort, a good portion of it his own (and who has a very good chance of losing the office he currently holds as a result of the way in which he conducted his campaign against a man who has become a very, very, very popular Senator).

For my part, I think politicians should do what they promise they will do while running for office.

Obamacare will never be repealed as law as long as a guy named, well, "Obama" is in office. The Democrats who hold the Majority on the Senate right now are refusing to vote on bills to restore funding to care for children suffering from cancer, veterans, the National Parks, back pay for Federal Workers, military Chaplains, and several other functions of government, and they are refusing to do so in solidarity with the President. To think that a a repeal would be passed, let alone a Veto Override, is even remotely possible in such an atmosphere is simply not logical. Defunding, and failing that, delaying it, are the only routes available to us.

Senator Cornyn, chose a different route than Senator Cruz has. We shall see next year if the voters of Texas rewards him for that effort or if they still wish to have Senators like Ted Cruz.

I know where my money will be.SargeVininghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13953058448874483643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147944621013401905.post-52547233021149913562013-10-09T11:42:23.054-05:002013-10-09T11:42:23.054-05:00Initially, the Veterans were threatend with arrest...Initially, the Veterans were threatend with arrest:

http://usfinancepost.com/administration-threatens-to-arrest-wwii-vets-over-shutdown-7937.html

"However yesterday when the federal government began its first day of a shutdown, which began following the refusal of Democrats to negotiate with Republicans over a continuing resolution to fund the government, park officials announced that the National Mall would be closed to tourists and barricaded it off. This was done despite the fact that the mall, which contains such things as the Jefferson Memorial is completely outdoors and available to the public to simply stroll along while viewing the memorials.

The White House as well as the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to permit World War II veterans to visit the World War II Memorial."

It was then that several republican lawmakers met the Veterans at the memorial and distracted the guards so that they could get through:

http://dailycaller.com/2013/10/01/wwii-vets-storm-shut-down-memorial-as-gop-congressman-reportedly-distracts-cops/

"WASHINGTON — A group of veterans didn’t let the federal government shutdown stop them from seeing the World War II Memorial on Tuesday.

The government had closed the memorial due to the partial shutdown of the government, which went into effect Tuesday morning. But with the assistance of lawmakers, a group of Honor Flight World War II veterans knocked over the barriers to see the site."

Tha night, the Park Service wired the Barrycades together, making them more difficult to move. As another group of Veterans showed up, Republican lawmakers did again, this time aremed with bolt cutters:

http://nation.foxnews.com/2013/10/05/texas-lawmakers-defend-wwii-memorial-bolt-cutters

"A group of Texas congressmen armed with bolt cutters made their way to the World War II Memorial in Washington after they learned the National Park Service had reinforced the barriers blocking the site with wire."

Several days ago, Viet Nam Veterans were asked to leave thier monument. Park and DC police showed uo, the DC polie had a police dog with them. Over the weekend, WW2 Veterans removed the barrycades that prevented people from visiting the Iwo Jima Monument--significant as one of those was a waterfilled vehicle barricade taht had to be emptied of water first.

It is clear that the intention of the Adminsitration, as evidenced by direct orders from the White House, was to deny access to these memorials to Veterans. And it can logically be inferred that the reason for doing so was to pin the blame on Republicans. However, when it came time to let Veterans in to see their memorial, it was Republican lawmakers who showed up with bolt cutters while Democrats decried it as "grandstanding."

It wasn't until the Civl Disobedience occured, along with the bad publicity that comes from massive government over reach that the knuckeheads at the White House (who issued theinitial order) decided it ws a bad idea to tell vets they can't visit war memorials.

Today, only veterans are allowed in the Memorial, There is an opening in the Barrycades there that is just barely wide enough for a wheelchair to get through, all the other Barrycades have been wired together. Yesterday, a rally was held on the Mall adjacent to the Memorial by supports of Amnesty for Illegal aliens, complete with stages, a sound system and booths for different groups, Nobody was prevented from going to that event. Nobody checked to see if people walking across the mall at that location were part of the demonstration. They did, however, check the ID of any family members who want to go see the WW2 Monument with Paw Paw.

As a Veteran who was spit on in a New Jersey airport in 1972, I am familiar with the fact that it is a poltical philosophy that motivates such conduct. These are people who beleive in the Power of Government---not the Power of Government to Do Good, just the Power of Government.

SargeVininghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13953058448874483643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147944621013401905.post-59283495455087969962013-10-09T10:19:18.705-05:002013-10-09T10:19:18.705-05:00although it's technically civil disobedience, ...although it's technically civil disobedience, I can't imagine in my wildest fantasies some knucklehead in the government actually telling vets that they can't visit war memorials. Although, when you think about it, maybe the civil disobedience isn't only with those who are moving the barrycades, but those who are "making as hard as possible" on the people in order to not only bring the shutdown to an end, but to remind the government as a whole, Executive and Congressional just who they really work for.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08861257200565918181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147944621013401905.post-22579411398077369262013-10-09T08:23:54.861-05:002013-10-09T08:23:54.861-05:00The only thing that upsets me about this is those ...The only thing that upsets me about this is those two idiots relieveing themselves on the port-a-potties. They are trying to impart knowledge they've gained through experience. That's OK, I guess, but that knowledge came by making a thousand small mistakes, none of which will kill you, so go ahead and make them.

Backpacking is a learning experience, in matters both practical and spiritual. I'm 60 years old and still learning about backpacking, and I am still amazed at what it does for my Spirit and the way it serves to reduce the distance I sometimes put between myself and God. I doubt I would enjoy it if it weren't that way.

Go out in the woods. Make some mistakes. Make little ones. If you choose your destination and distance in relationship to your experience, you should be OK. If you go to a State Park for your first couple of outings, you should be alright, if you try hiking the Appalachian Trail on the first day, things might be different.

Good luck with your Girl Scouts. You'll have fun. You'll make mistakes. You'll get drenched with rain, bitten by bugs, burn food, fix boo boos and sleep badly. None of that will matter after you've had some special moment with your daughter or one of the other girls---or when you step out onto a scenic overlook, or suddenly come upon a pond in the forest or a brook laughing its way over mossy rocks on its way to the ocean. I hope you come back in a bit and let us know what some of those experiences were.

You and your daughter will have the time of your life and both of you will smile about all of it years later.

Hike Your Own Hike

See you on the trail.SargeVininghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13953058448874483643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147944621013401905.post-64426019934516400212013-10-06T22:40:33.016-05:002013-10-06T22:40:33.016-05:00Perfect. Most "how to"s for beginners are overwhelmingly loaded with waaaay more info than we can truly begin with. This actually sounds doable and may be just the confidence builder I need.
